Dunfermline Athletic Bank on Victor Wanyama to Avoid Relegation

Scottish Championship side Dunfermline Athletic hope that former Harambee Stars skipper Victor Wanyama will help improve fortunes at the “Pars” and aid them away from relegation after signing the 33-year-old midfielder on a short-term deal.

Dunfermline are currently ninth in the 10-team Scottish Championship with 27 points from 29 games and are in the playoff to avoid relegation, with bottom-placed Airdrieonians already relegated to the Scottish League One.

In the Scottish Championship format, the 10 teams play each other four times, twice in the first half of the season (home and away) and twice in the second half of the season (home and away), making a total of 180 games, with each team playing 36 games.

Wanyama’s short-term contract sees him reunite with Dunfermline Athletic manager Neil Lennon who managed him at Scottish giants Celtic between 2011 and 2013 before he joined English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur on a 12.5-million-pound move.

Wanyama then left Spurs for Canadian MLS side CF Montreal where his contract ran out in January this year.

“DAFC are delighted to announce the signing of Kenyan international, Victor Wanyama, on a deal until the end of the season, subject to international clearance,” Dunfermline Athletic announced on their website on Wednesday evening.

“The 33-year-old defensive midfielder has had a decorated career, playing for clubs such as Celtic, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur and most recently, CF Montreal. Wanyama made 64 appearances for Kenya, captaining the country at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, before retiring from international football in 2021.

“At Celtic, Wanyama quickly became a cult hero with his impressive performances for new manager, Neil Lennon’s side. Besides winning two league titles, Wanyama’s stock rose when he scored against Barcelona in the Champions League as Celtic pulled off a 2-1 win back in 2012.

“At the end of that season, Wanyama joined Premier League club Southampton for £12.5 million, making history as the first Kenyan in the English topflight.

“Following a spell at the Saints, he joined Tottenham Hotspur, reuniting with his former manager, Mauricio Pochettino. Victor was part of the squad that made the Champions League final for Spurs back in 2019. Victor joins the Pars after leaving Montreal in January. Welcome to the Pars Victor!,” the club celebrated.
