“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” — Lao Tzu
This timeless wisdom captures the unwavering spirit of Mr Barnabas Korir, Youth Development Director at Athletics Kenya.
His bold step ahead of the 6th Kip Keino Classic not only filled an 8,000-seater stadium—it also touched lives, including mine, as a grassroots talent scout working in Kenya’s underserved communities.
A Surprising Shift: Introducing Ticket Sales
Just days before the Kip Keino Classic, Mr. Korir introduced something unfamiliar in local athletics: a ticketing system.
Curious and slightly skeptical, I sent him a message:
“Good afternoon, Mr. Chairman. I would like to give my views on the ticket thing… Kindly sell the VIP tickets only. That is how to start.”
He read it but didn’t respond. So, I decided to follow up in person.
A Visit and a Change of Heart
Two days later, I visited his office with a friend who’s an influencer.
When I asked why he didn’t consider my suggestion, I explained my reasoning: VIP tickets are easier to sell. Many dreams of being on the VIP list because of the comfort and elite networking opportunities Athletics Kenya usually provides for special guests.
But Mr. Korir’s response left me humbled.
He explained that all the money from ticket sales regular and VIP would go directly into supporting upcoming athletes from marginalized and hard-to-reach communities.
As a grassroots talent scout, this hit home.
I work with young, gifted athletes in villages, highlands, and schools where opportunities are scarce. This wasn’t just about selling tickets. It was a community investment.
Taking Action: Using Influence for Impact
Inspired by his vision, I pitched my friend the influencer as someone who could help push ticket sales.
Mr Korir agreed, and we got to work. We believed in the mission, and we wanted others to believe in it too.
May 31st: A Dream Realized
On May 31st, Mr. Korir’s dream became reality.
The 8,000-capacity stadium was full not only with local fans, but also guests from as far as the United States who had flown in for the Kip Keino Classic. It was a proud moment for Kenyan athletics.
Behind the Scenes: A Powerful Team Effort
The success of the event was thanks to the tireless efforts of many:
– Ibrahim Hussein, father of marathon in Kenya, led the technical team.
– Mr. Kennedy Tanui, Technical Director, ensured precision in execution by the technical officials.
– Volunteers, protocol teams and hospitality and disciplined security forces ensured peace and order.
– Colonel Masai and Lieutenant Colonel Langat even rescheduled other events to make the stadium available for the event.
Everyone showed up. And it showed.
Going Global: Kenya on 22 International Screens
Kenyan broadcaster NTV led national coverage, and thanks to international media partnerships, the Kip Keino Classic was broadcast in 22 countries.
The world watched as Kenya delivered a world class athletics event rooted in tradition and driven by vision.
Beyond the Track: Magical Kenya, Power of Sports Tourism
Following the event, several international athletes stayed longer not just to rest, but to explore Kenya.
Their destination? The Masai Mara.
This wasn’t just a safari. It was sports tourism in action a beautiful showcase of what Kenya offers beyond competition.
Under the Magical Kenya brand, athletes experienced:
– Breathtaking wildlife safaris
– Authentic cultural interactions with the Maasai community
– A deeper connection to the land of champions
As someone working at the grassroots level, I was filled with pride.
Kenya is not only a land of speed and endurance, but also a land of magic, heritage, and storytelling.
Looking Ahead: The Diamond League Dream
It’s the prayer of Athletics Kenya and mine too that the Kip Keino Classic will soon be upgraded to Diamond League status.
The vision, execution, and spirit of this year’s event have proven Kenya is ready.
Insha’Allah, may that day come soon.
Final Thoughts: From Grassroots to Global
Mr Korir’s leadership reminded me that change doesn’t always come through massive revolutions. Sometimes, it starts with a ticket. A belief. A vision.
As a grassroots scout who witnesses daily how hard it is for raw talent to break through; I saw this event as hope in action. A celebration not just of speed but of solidarity, investment, and dreams. Thanks to everyone who made it possible by purchasing a ticket. You are a true Hero for making a dream come through.
